From Captain Marvel To Aladdin The 15 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2019

A new year means a whole slate of new movies, and Marvel will be leading the way with three highly-anticipated features. But, it isn’t all about the MCU. We also have new movies from Jordan Peele, Quentin Tarantino, and Greta Gerwig, plus a flick based on a bizarre true story and a live-action remake of a Disney animated classic. Here are the 15 most-anticipated movies of 2019.

Captain Marvel

Coming in March, this movie stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jude Law, and it tells the story of Marvel character Carol Danvers and what happens when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Avengers: Endgame

Another highly-anticipated Marvel flick, Avengers: Endgame will pick up where Avengers: Infinity War left off. It is set to hit theaters on April 26th and will be the final story in the Avengers saga that began with the original 2012 movie.

Dark Phoenix

Yet another Marvel project, Dark Phoenix will be the next chapter in the X-Men franchise, and it is a direct sequel of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. But, the story takes place a decade later. It is set to hit theaters in June.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

This film from director Quentin Tarantino centers on the infamous 1969 Manson Family murders, but it’s not a “Manson movie.” Instead, it is a period piece that explores 1960s hippie culture as well as Hollywood during that era.

The Tate-LaBianca murders are more of a backdrop to the main story that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Tarantino says that the movie will tell the story of a “Hollywood that doesn’t exist anymore.”

The Irishman

For the first time since Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese is reuniting with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci for this mob flick about a hitman’s possible involvement in Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance. This biopic will be available to stream on Netflix later this year, but we are also hoping for a theatrical release. We really want to see the de-aging of De Niro via CGI on the big screen.

It: Chapter Two

This supernatural horror film is the sequel to 2017’s It, and both films were adapted from Stephen King’s 1986 novel. Chapter Two will pick up the story 27 years after the events of the first movie (that took place in 1989) when It returns, and the Losers’ Club goes back to Derry to end the shape-shifting beast once and for all.

Glass

Night Shyamalan’s superhero thriller Glass is a sequel to his 2000 movie Unbreakable and 2016’s Split. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and James McAvoy, and will be one of the first big movies to hit theaters in 2019, thanks to its scheduled release on January 18th.

Joker

DC Comics gets in on the action with their crime film Joker, which is intended to be the first movie in a series of DC-based flicks that are separate from the DC Extended Universe. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, and it tells the villain’s origin story as a failed standup comedian who goes insane and becomes a criminal mastermind. It is scheduled to be released in October.

Aladdin

This live-action musical fantasy is based on the 1990s Disney animated classic, and it stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott. Directed by Guy Ritchie, this movie will hit theaters on May 24th, and you will be able to watch it in IMAX and 3D.

Hellboy

Another superhero movie, this one comes from Dark Horse Comics and stars Milla Jovovich and David Harbour. It is a reboot of the Hellboy film series and draws inspiration from Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury.

It was originally supposed to be a sequel to Hellboy II: The Golden Army. But, when Guillermo del Toro didn’t get the writer-director role this time around, Ron Perlman refused to participate, so they turned it into an R-rated reboot.

Ad Astra

Another movie that stars Brad Pitt, Ad Astra is James Grey’s latest offering, and it is a sci-fi adventure that features Pitt as an Army Corps engineer who signs up for the same mission through the solar system that resulted in his father’s disappearance.

The Last Thing He Wanted

Writer-director Dee Rees follows up her Oscar-nominated Mudbound with this big-budget political thriller that is based on the 1996 novel by Joan Didion. The movie tells the story of Washington Post reporter Elena McMahon (Anne Hathaway) who is covering the 1984 presidential primaries. But, after her mom dies and McMahon returns home to find her dad on his deathbed, she takes over his role as an arms dealer for the US Government.

Little Women

You might think that we don’t need yet another remake of this classic Louisa May Alcott novel, but with a director like Greta Gerwig and a cast that features Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern, many people will be rushing to the movie theater on Christmas Day 2019.

Lucy In the Sky

Based on the bizarre 2007 true story that you might remember as the “NASA love triangle,” Lucy In the Sky is Noah Hawley’s psychological sci-fi thriller that tells the story of stressed-out astronaut Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman). Cola took a deranged trip across five states while wearing space diapers when the astronaut she was romantically involved with (Jon Hamm) starts dating another woman (Zazie Beets).

Us

Building on his success from his 2016 horror-dramedy Get Out, director Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions’ latest project is Us, a socially-conscious horror-thriller.

There are not a lot of details yet about the film, but it does star Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke and seemingly focuses on a family of four who has to deal with some strange and sinister occurrences.
